It is one thing to ride the popularly bandwagon. But it’s pure genius when you turn it around in its head and create something good for your local community. Inspired by the world-wide social media phenomenon, the ALS ice bucket challenge, Hyderabad-based journalist, Manju Latha Kalanidihi came up with the Rice Bucket challenge.
In this challenge participants need to give a bucket of rice to someone in need. In a country where roughly over 20 crore people go to bed hungry every day, this initiative is much needed. In less than a day since their Facebook page was set up, they have gathered over 10,000 supporters (a number that is increasing every minute) and received wide national and international media coverage.
Described as a “desi challenge for desi needs”, many have already started giving to the needy and are tagging their donations using the hashtag #RiceBucketChallenge.
