The year 2015, as many in the Indian startup ecosystem call, was the year of success. As per a report, capital worth $ 9 billion was invested across the country in multiple startups, which is equal to the cumulative funding in 2010 to 2014.

It was also reported that the Merger and Acquisitions across borders increased from 55 in 2014 to 120+ in 2015. While most suggest, the credit goes to the Startup India program, we believe Digital India initiative had an equal role to play. Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s visit to Silicon Valley, opened the doors of investment and mentorship from international startup players. As the initiative stood tall under its 9 pillars, it promised to deliver as per the expectation. Here’s a look at the milestones achieved by the initiative in the past one year:

  • India is a home to 10.5 million active mobile phone users:

India, as the popular belief, was left behind in the industrial revolution due to colonization. But taking the back step in the mobile revolution would be a big mistake. Indians are showing growing interest in the mobile industry which also opens the doors for international startups to try their hands on the Indian market. It is due the growing mobile reach and the smart phone era, 42 companies entered the $100 million valuation club in 2015 as compared to 13 in 2014.

  • Qualcomm announced the child-friendly tablet to empower Indian education system:

With its Design in India initiative and the promise to launch the child-friendly tablets to improvise elementary education in India, Qualcomm reinsured the faith of Indian investors in the education sector. Consequently, the funding in EdTech startups in 2015 was almost triple as a comparison to 2014.

  • 1,12,871 Kms of Optical Fibre Cable for BharatNet

Slow internet connectivity was once a major drawback for foreign investors and entrepreneurs to build operations in the Indian market. With Digital India initiative in place, the dream of high-speed internet connectivity across the country is moving towards becoming a reality. Silicon Valley is the perfect example of what Indians can achieve outside the territory with the required resources than what they can achieve on the inside.
